Woodcut Drawings (1990’s)

In the mid to late 1990’s I called myself an artist eventhough I might have only created 3-4 drawings per year for 3 years in a row from 1993-1996. Nevertheless, the images I created during that time using a ballpoint pen and marker on paper meant a lot to me and my small audience of friends whose lives I was depicting in the work.

In coming up with this drawing style, I wanted it to have the fluidity of Japanese woodcuts, the black and white quality of Keith Haring’s subway murals, the simplicity in line like Al Hirschfeld, and the inspiration of the hood like Ernie Barnes.

These drawings were all created in either my mother’s dinner table in our Harlem apartment or my unfurnished one bedroom in Atlanta.
